Dear Veronica

The Metropolitan Police have done exactly the right thing in this master by not disclosing who the 15 people were that received the 20 fixed penalty notices for it would be totally unfair for these individuals grossly infringing on their human rights as well as civil rights. The venues at which those fined can likewise not be disclosed by the Police nor by the government for the same reason, It is for those individuals who have been fined to take legal action against the Metrolopitan Police and for a Court of Law to decide whether they were rightly fined with Fixed penalty Notices if the individuals wish to take this course of action. If even one of those individuals takes such an action against the Metrolitan Police for discrimination in the issue of the fines and cites the grounds that that the were attending the parties at the invitation of the governmen t at 10 Downing Street or elsewhere, that is the only mechanism which I will support. The Court can then force the Metropolitan Police to releease the names of all the people to whom the questionaaires were sent and ask the Metropolitan Police for the reason that others were not. This will make the case for discrimination against those following effectively orders in the form of invitations to attend the parties from others who have not been issued with the Fines, including the Prime Minister himself.

For this reason I am unable to sign your letter to No 10 Downing Street.

Yours sincerely

Dear Shantanu,

It’s been a long wait and a lot has happened. But this week, there was finally an update on the partygate scandal, where party after party took place in Downing Street during lockdown, as government ministers and officials flouted the strict rules they asked the rest of us to follow. [1]

The Met Police have finally revealed that as part of their investigation into these parties, they have issued 20 lockdown fines to 15 people. But they’ve also announced that they won’t name who has been fined, or even confirm which events the fines relate to. [2]

Shantanu, do you think that’s good enough?

After all we went through, the least we deserve is to know whether our lockdown rulemakers were also lockdown rulebreakers. None of us can forget the extraordinary sacrifices so many of us made during lockdown, and the kick in the teeth we felt when we discovered the same rules hadn’t been followed in Downing Street. [3]

Shantanu, will you add your name to the open letter demanding Downing Street names those lawmakers and senior officials who have been fined? You can add your name with one click below, and for every 100 names we receive, we’ll send them a notification. There’ll also be a chance to write to your MP and let them know what you want to happen next.

YES, I'LL ADD MY NAME

I'M NOT SIGNING THIS BECAUSE...

Here’s the full text of the open letter:

To: Number 10 Downing Street

We - the British public - made huge sacrifices during lockdown. Many of us still live with the pain and regret of the things we missed out on because we were following the rules. From millions spending birthdays alone, to the disappointment of Christmas plans cancelled at the last minute, to families unable to say final goodbyes to their loved ones. But we know now that some of the people who wrote these rules also broke them and it’s time the full story was shared.

After all we have been through, and for the sake of democracy, we demand the full details about fines issued to Downing Street party goers be made public, so our lawmakers can be held to account.

Signed,

Thousands of members of the British public
